I absolutely love The Netherlands. We were there a year ago in February, and I'm dreaming up our next trip. My plan is to go during tulip season in a few years, if not sooner. :)
It sounds like you're off to a great start. I'm considering a bike ride from Amsterdam to Paris and hanging in both cities prior to and afterwards; I love both cities ! Safe travels.
The route would not include any major highways; seeing the small towns and country roads is the best part of all the rides I do. I just recently finished riding the Erie Canal from Buffalo to Albany. Riding keeps me above ground, upright, and able to continue having reasonable conversations... I'm down checking in on my 95yo Mom, maybe we can all get together. Enjoy your adventure. Cheers,
Unfortunately we did not get to Rotterdam. We were mostly in Amsterdam, but also spent time in Haarlem as well as out in the country to see the tulips (and other flowers). We found the people warm, friendly, and talkative and we so enjoyed walking everywhere (very flat country). My first trip there. Hope you had a great time as well.

Thanks Marty. A bike ride alongside the highways would be quite an undertaking. The trucks in Europe, as you probably remember, drive very fast.

I love reading travelogues about my home country! It really makes me see the Netherlands with new, more appreciative eyes.
And in my windmill tour I learned about the polders!
Thanks for sharing. I went to The Hague recently and found it so much more enticing than Amsterdam. Would love to go to Leiden
Oh, you might really enjoy Leiden and Gouda (I didn’t go to Gouda but visited on a previous trip).
We spent 10 wonderful days in the Netherlands in May so I am eager to see it now through your perspective and beautiful writing.
Thank you, Maud! Did you go to Rotterdam? We considered a day trip because some locals said we should go there, but didn’t end up going there.
Looking forward to reading about the rest of the trip :)

We didn’t make it to Haarlem, just passed through on the train. Yes, the people are so welcoming!
