I still have the fleecy gilet I bought in SF on the Fourth of July over a decade ago, having arrived totally unprepared from LA

One will always arrive unprepared in SF from SoCal. I do this myself sometimes, and I'm only driving 18 miles.

If you lived to a hundred and never walked the length of the bridge then, most likely, you would regret not having done so. It's always worth doing something that seems difficult, or time-consuming, or just plain annoying (attempting to properly wash an uncooperative dog, say, after it has been playing in the mud) so that you might look back on events in future. Life offers us only a few chances at doing certain things, and if everyone leapt at opportunities provided to us we might, as a species, learn a great deal.

Some crazy people have been attempting to get me to spend New Year's Day splashing around in the Atlantic, swimming out from the frigid coast of Scotland, and I have resisted at every opportunity. One of these days I am going to crack, and accept their offer, and I will probably hate every moment of it. However, if I live to be a hundred, and never partook of this...

It's just a thought.
